Yardwaste Composting: General Information

Progressive thinking and technical expertise led Land and Lakes to become one of the first environmental service companies in Illinois to receive yardwaste recycling permits. Since then, we have developed into the state’s largest yardwaste compost operator in terms of volume of material taken in and customers served.

Our five large-scale, state-of-the-art composting facilities, cover 250 acres and serve over 80 Chicago communities with leaf, grass and brush composting capabilities. Individual homeowners, municipalities and business maintenance crews can haul their yardwaste to our composting facilities, or Land and Lakes can bring our service on-site to your location.

What does Land and Lakes do with all this natural debris? We recycle and convert it into a 100 percent organic and contaminant-free compost.

In high demand by landscapers and homeowners, compost is used in gardens for potting, and for beautification of city parks, cemeteries and golf courses. A terrific soil ammendment, compost reduces run-off and evaporation, helps control erosion and weeds and enhances appearance.

Each year, Land and Lakes processes hundreds of thousands of cubic yards of natural waste into a premium finished compost product, making our company the largest composter in the state. A consideration of the need for composting dramatizes its escalation in importance and usage over the past several years.

  • Illinois landfill space is running out, forcing landfill costs higher and higher.
  • Yardwaste accounts for approximately 17 percent of the total waste generated.
  • Composting reduces yardwaste to about one-third of its original volume.
  • Composting makes environmental and economical sense.

When it comes to composting, what goes around, comes around. It’s all about returning it to its roots. Composting of yardwaste makes environmental and economical sense for our communities.
